Replay any workflow from a failed step

Fix the bug, deploy, and replay a failed workflow from the step that broke. The steps before it keep their results and do not run again.

Replays

When step six of a ten-step workflow fails, the first five have already done their work: the account exists, the card is charged, the email is sent. Retrying the whole run from the start was never safe, and retrying the failed attempt only helps if the failure was temporary.

Runnel 2.8 lets you replay a workflow from any step. The steps before it keep their stored results; the chosen step and everything after it run again, on the code you have deployed since.

In the dashboard, open a failed run, pick a step on the timeline and choose Replay from here. You can replay from any step, not only the failed one, which helps when a bug in an earlier step produced a wrong result that only failed later.

A replay keeps the run’s id, so links, logs and webhooks stay in one place. Each replay is listed on the run with who started it, the version it ran on and the step it started from.

Selecting runs in bulk

On the runs page, filter by job, status and error message, select up to 500 runs and replay them from the same step in one go.

Improved

  • The run timeline shows each step’s stored result, up to 64 KB, so you can check it before replaying.
  • GET /v1/runs/{id} includes a replays list.

Fixes

  • Steps with the same name inside a loop were stored once. Each call is now stored separately, as charge-card#1, charge-card#2.
